This is one of the most unique pieces of cloisonné in the collection. It’s not actually arranged and photographed properly. This is an ancient seismograph used to warn of seismic activity or earth quakes. The eight little toads are meant to be placed one under each dragon. The dragons are spouts that release a metal ball when earth tremors begin. The location of the tremor is detected by which frog the ball falls into. It was invented by Chang Heng.
