We are presenting the collection and inventory belonging to Luigi. Luigi is 101 years old and going strong in Boca Raton, Florida. The owner of Luigi’s Objects D’ Art Gallery formerly located at 2 locations, Federal Hwy. (around 35 years), and at Palmetto Park & Power Line Rd. Now his collection takes up 4500 sq. ft. of storage space. It includes well over 5,000 items. From huge bronze fountains to miniature Chinese vases. Massive oil paintings to limited edition serigraphs. Over 200 NIB Hummel’s hundreds of B & G, Royal Copenhagen and Hummel plates. Many items with a retail value of 5 figures.
About 50% of the selection is Asian Art and Antiques, 20% Vintage & Modern Bronzes, 20% Collectible Plates and Porcelain figures. Concerning age, around 50% is modern, produced in the last 35 years. 30% Vintage and 20% Antiques. Also, there are loads of display cases, some very expensive, custom made, mahogany from a Palm Beach Porcelain shop (see the carved stone collection section), to well over 400 carved teak and other wood stands for stone carvings and vases. These figures are just rough estimates, ascertained by not just the owner and I but also the majority of the collection was appraised in 1999 by the well known Pompano Beach firm of Melanson & Melanson Marketing & Management Auctions & Appraisals (Leo & Pauline). The appraisal comprises a binder about 3 inches thick, 188 pages for approximately 2400 items, with a total wholesale/retail value of $1,213,465.00 (some items have been either sold or donated to various family members). Then, another $250,000. (at cost) in other art and carvings was added since the appraisal. Also the value of display cases, stacks of mixed content boxes, office furniture, etc.
We were offering this as one lot for an opening bid of $725,000.00 , without a hidden reserve price. We have since sold a few items from the collection and have lowered the opening bid to $649,000. Estimated retail value $2 million plus.
Given that much of it took a lifetime to collect, the opportunity of buying a ready made inventory at one-third of its value is phenomenal. I had an opportunity like this myself around 5 years ago. My wife and I bought the entire contents of a rare and out of print book business on eBay. Everything but the building. That purchase was the foundation of a business my wife has built into a career. She now tends to our inventory of over 25,000 books and has a basis to earn one hell of a decent income with a security blanket for retirement. Did I mention she loves dealing in old books?
It took all of fifteen days and some 2,000 images to present this compressed view of what can be expected. If you need details on particular items or a group of items, please let us know. We strongly recommend that you or an agent of yours set up an appointment to view the collection in person before placing any bid. I'm sure there will be collectors or dealers that know the value of what is being offered. But without actually seeing it all up close, one cannot be sure of what they are actually getting. We will be very happy to give a guided tour, talk about it's value and potential. We have been in the antiques, collectible and art business for almost 35 years.
